WhatsApp is a very easy to use application that allows its user to communicate with his or her contacts. In fact, it also allows exchanging media files and personal messages. The worst part of this app is that it does not provide a hiding feature which will make personal conversation or media files inaccessible to other users. This world-renowned communication app needs to install a specific feature that will protect your privacy by setting boundary rules such as app lock or passwords.
No one likes a nosy friend who always scans your phone and tries to invade your personal zone. A smart phone is absolutely a personal thing that might contain something you do not want to make it public. Friends and family members often forget the privacy matters and pass the boundary, intentional or unintentionally. Whatever may be the reason, you should not want someone to peek into your privacy zone. This is why you need to hide the images and videos downloaded from WhatsApp to stop any kind of harassment or offensive situation
Features of WhatsApp
It is the most traditional communication app that is being used by millions of users. It was commenced in the year 2009 and is currently owned by Facebook. The application allows a user to message, call or share files with other users in his or her contact list.
The shared media files are often stored in the gallery of your smart phone. This folder remains public as there is no hiding feature provided by the interface of the application. The personal messaging app does not provide a shielding feature that will protect private conversations or media files shared with other contacts. This is why the users often avail an app locker to protect the entire app from an intruder or an unauthorized person handling your phone. The app lockers allow securing the app via a password or a pattern lock system. It might seem convenient at first but eventually, it will become an irritating part when you have to provide the app password or the pattern lock whenever you need to operate the app. If the only thing you want to protect from a different user is the media files then you do not have to download 3rd party app locker to secure your privacy. There are proven ways to do it.
How to hide WhatsApp images and videos?
Those days are gone when you had to rely on the limited features of the applications you use. Due to the increase in innovative app developers, there are various ways to come up with new ideas and fill the gap of the trending apps you use. In this case, you can easily hide your images and videos in WhatsApp without even downloading an app locker. The proven techniques are mentioned below.
.nomedia file method
You need to have a ‘File Manager’ feature on your phone. If you do not have one, you can easily download one. You can prefer ES File Manager to access the system files of any app. The smart phones, these days, come with its own file manager.
Visit the File Manager app and find the folder for WhatsApp. It can be either in your SD card (external memory) or on your internal memory.
Find the file named ‘Media’ in the folder for WhatsApp app. Visit the folder to find another folder named ‘WhatsApp Images’.
Enter this folder and find a ‘+’ icon to add subfolders in this folder.
If you do not have this option, you will have to visit the ‘options’ to click and add a new folder.
Add a new folder inside the ‘WhatsApp Images’ folder and name it ‘.nomedia’.
This file will enable the user interface of your smart phone to identify the ‘WhatsApp Images’ folder as an important system folder. Once it is recognized as a system file, the operating system of the phone will hide the entire folder from the gallery. It means the normal users will not find it in the gallery.
Visit your system applications to find ‘gallery’. Open the app and clear its cache to initiate the hiding process. You will not have to restart your phone.
Repeat the process for the video folder in WhatsApp.
If you want to view the file again in the gallery, you have to reverse the process following the steps mentioned below.
Open your file manager feature and visit the WhatsApp folder.
Visit the ‘media’ folder to find the respective folder named ‘WhatsApp Images’ again.
After entering the image folder, you will find the ‘.nomedia’ folder you created before.
Select the folder by long tap and choose the delete option.
Once the folder is deleted, the image files will reappear in your gallery.
.WhatsApp Images method
This process is also very simple if you can follow the steps properly.
Find the ‘File Manager’ feature on your smart phone. As mentioned earlier, if do not have that feature, you can download a free file manager app from the Play Store.
Visit the ‘WhatsApp’ folder via this file manager app. You will find it along with other folders of different apps.
Enter this folder. You will find another folder. Select the folder named ‘Media’.
Enter this folder and locate a subfolder named ‘WhatsApp Images’.
Long press the folder so that the edit option appears on the screen.
Rename the folder from ‘WhatsApp Images’ to ‘.WhatsApp Images’. All you have to do is to add a ‘.’ In the beginning of the folder name.
Simultaneously, the user interface will consider it as an important system file and hide it.
Clear the cache file of ‘gallery’ and hide all your WhatsApp media files.
If you want to see your files again, all you have to do is to open the File Manager and revisit the same folder. Rename the folder by removing the ‘.’ and clear the cache of the ‘Gallery’. The files will reappear again in your gallery.
Renaming the folders will not change the place where the media files will be saved. You will not be able to see them in the gallery. Nothing will apparently change and you will be able to hide all your private media files from nosy users.
